A u g i e ’ s S t o r y
Proud parents, Dave and Joanna Matthies welcomed their third son David August “Augie” Matthies into the world on
January 20, 2009. Augie was born with a rare congenital heart defect called Truncus Arteriosus with an interrupted aortic
arch. At 9 days old, Augie had open heart surgery and was hospitalized in the Pediatric Surgerical Heart Unit (PSHU) at
Hope Children’s Hospital. Dave and Joanna were fortunate to be able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House, which allowed
them to be close to Augie at all times. Augie will have to undergo additional open heart surgeries throughout his life and the
Matthies’ will stay at the Ronald McDonald House again in future years to come. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
